The Hirst Priory Basement

Thank you to Richard Moore Photography and the newly married Mr & Mrs Speight for sharing this stunningly atmosphric photograph of the Hirst Priory Basement with us.

Hirst Priory Basement

The brick vaulted Hirst Priory basement sits beneath the earliest part of the building dating back to the mid 1700’s.  It originally served as the cold store for keeping food and game preserved before the advent of modern appliances.  You can still see the historic meat hooks and stone preparation slabs in the separate rooms off this main passage.

It is a wonderfully atmospheric place that we plan to begin development of this winter so we can provide themed and membership based events to offer something new to our local patrons on the Isle of Axholme.
